Washington DC – Federal Triangle: National Archives Developing – The Future

Future, often referred to as Present, and its companionpiece Past, flanking the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance of the National Archives Building, had been modeled by Robert Aitken and carved out of Indiana limestone by Edward H. Ratti in 1935. Future, is symbolized by a 20-foot tall seated female dressed in extended robes which are draped about the back of her chair. Her appropriate left arm hangs more than the arm of the chair. Her suitable proper arm rests across her lap on best of an open book. Her head is partially covered by the drapery and she wears sandals. The base, inscribed with the words "Past is Prologue", is adorned with shields and other military and government symbols carved in relief.
The National Archives Building, known informally as Archives I, positioned north of the National Mall on Constitution Avenue in Washington, DC, opened as its original headquarters in 1935. The developing was created in Classical Revival style by John Russell Pope. It holds the original copies of the three major formative documents of the United States and its government: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
